Noccalula Falls, Gadsden, Alabama
A place of breathtaking beauty, the Noccalula Falls is one of the most beautiful sights in the state.
According to the legend, the falls was once known as the Black Creek Falls. The native Indian chief had a lovely daughter, Noccalula. After rejecting many young braves, the chief finally selected a husband for his daughter from the neighboring tribe. Unfortunately, Noccalula had fallen in love with another youngman and begged her father to allow her to marry him. Her father was adamant in his choice and the heartbroken girl ran to the falls and took her own life. The distressed chief named the falls after his daughter and since then it has been known as the Noccalula Falls.
Today, the Noccalula Falls is housed in a park that is also home to numerous hiking trails as well as botanical gardens, and a swimming spot. Visitors can also tour a pioneer village that is constructed of log cabins. There is a petting zoo too.
Visitors can camp in tents in the adjacent campground. The campground has cabins available for rent as well.
